Submitted proposal for 'lilith's room ...' ~ check

As an artist one is constantly, or should be constantly, submitting work. I am thrilled to say I just submitted my application to Ortega y Gasset Projects in Brooklyn, NY. I submitted a proposal to recreate my installation, ‘lilith’s room …’ in their ‘The Skirt’ gallery. I feel like that is a perfectly named gallery to exhibit any of my work!!

I submitted pictures from when ‘lilith’s room …’ was exhibited at Bridgewater State University (2021) and at Manhattanville College (2021). Along with this proposal/artist’s statement that AI helped me craft. I had been VERY against AI, however it did help get me started.

This proposal is for the recreation of an immersive installation titled “lilith’s room,”in your Skirt space. This installation varies depending on the limitations and opportunities of the gallery. I feel that your space would be an exciting setting for ‘lilth’s room …’

This installation evolved from my earlier sculpture, ‘lilith’ (2012). The life-sized plaster dress evokes Lilith, the mythical first woman who abandoned Eden’s constraints to live on her own terms. The sculpture celebrates Lilith’s independent spirit and assertive feminine power by being adorned with lush imagery of life and creation.

”lilith’s room” expands on the fertile motifs of the dress, transforming the gallery into a captivating space filled with blue and white intuitive line paintings of prowling animals, powerful goddesses, sensual vines, imaginary beasts and more. The result: an enchanting sanctuary encouraging imagination and wonder.

Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s “A Room of One’s Own,” the installation evokes a safe and nurturing space where individuals can freely explore their imaginations and embrace their true selves. Hand-printed furniture, fantastical objects, and enigmatic tableaux reminiscent of Lilith herself invite participants to let go of exterior stories and demands and connect with their own creativity. The installation is a prompt to disregard society’s limitations and to embrace one’s authentic self. ‘lilith’s room...’ is a reminder that when given space to bloom, one’s creativity and self-knowledge have no bounds.

As an artist, I am dedicated to making art that is provocative, that makes the viewer stop and think, art that will prompt a reexamination of an idea or belief.

Submitting for any call for art can be an exhausting job; gathering informations, sizing your images and then there is the artist’s statement. As I am getting myself back on the submitting bandwagon I find myself relying on my old blog for a lot of information?!?! But with posting on instagram and other social media demands I haven’t posted much on any of my blogs!?! (Because of technical issues my old blog isn’t working as I’d like) So my intention is to post more and post here!!! I really miss writing my blog - the thing is it has gotten more complicated :(

I should hear back from the gallery by early June, 2024. Let’s keep our fingers crossed as the Skirt space looks like it could be a stellar location for ‘lilith’s room …’

peace, Virginia
