virginia fitzgerald
artist

The dress project is a synthesis of Fitzgerald’s experience as an artist, mother, wife and woman in today’s world and culture.  The ‘Dress’ image represents a vessel containing the spiritual, emotional and physical essence of being female.  Through it Fitzgerald addresses issues such as birth, sexuality and a woman’s role to family and society: past, present and future.

Creating and recreating the image of the ‘Dress’ has opened a floodgate of ideas for Fitzgerald.   The image of the ‘Dress’ has elicited thoughts and emotions from its audience; there is an intuitive sense of kinship to this project, an innate understanding of the deeper meanings.

The creation process of the dress is rooted deeply in the found or chosen materials used.  There is the initial challenge to bring the puzzle together while considering aesthetic and artistic standards. The dress is also a vehicle for Fitzgerald to highlight different features of materials that may be overlooked in the quick paced life that we live.  The Dress Project has an energy and momentum all its own, which continues to inspire, incite & educate.
